A cardiologist is the specialist in diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases of the heart and circulatory system.
- Warning signs: chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, unusual fatigue or dizziness.
- Risk factors: hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, or family history.
- Preventive check-up: if you're over 40 or a high-performance athlete.
Recognize a heart attack in time
The faster the signs are recognized, the better the odds of a good outcome. Here's what it can feel like — the body doesn't always warn you with chest pain alone.
Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or upper back.
Pressure, tightness, or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or that comes and goes.
Pain spreading to one or both arms — most often the left — or the shoulder.
Nausea, stomach discomfort, or vomiting — sometimes mistaken for a digestive issue.
Shortness of breath, sudden cold sweat, or lightheadedness — even without obvious chest pain.
Having these symptoms right now?
Call emergency services immediately (911 in Mexico) — don't wait to see if the pain passes on its own.
Don't drive yourself to the hospital. Sit down, stay calm, and if possible unlock the door for paramedics.
If you're not allergic and have no contraindication, chew an aspirin while help arrives — ask your doctor in advance whether this applies to you.
In women, warning signs can be different and subtler: unusual extreme fatigue, nausea, back or jaw pain — sometimes without the classic chest pain. Don't dismiss them for not fitting the "typical" pattern.
